about
“Sweet Bitterness” was written while I was in my winter funk. I characterize that with a lack of motivation, longing for happier times, and just an overall feeling of wanting to escape to a different place. With this song, the desire to look at life like when you were a child is the most prominent source of inspiration. It’s the feeling of getting excited over the smallest things as a kid, and not experiencing that same amount of joy in current moments. I wanted to capture that feeling of insecurity in the lyrics, and the innocence of the old memories in the music. The hitting line in the song is “I wanna feel alive”, which encompasses the entire meaning of the song. I co-produced this song with Michael Jack, and worked with some other amazing musicians to create this song, and I’m glad it could come alive the way it did, and make me feel alive while watching it develop!
lyrics
There is a fire waiting for a spark but I don’t know when it’ll catch
And I am unsteady, rocking on my feet, no escape or going back
To ignorance and bliss, happiness, simple as it was before
Before all of this, sweet bitterness, it opened up so much more
I would like to look at life with other eyes
So that I might find new highs, that’ll make me wanna try
I wanna feel alive
I’m kinda reckless, also very anxious and it’s my fatal flaw
Perfection’s what I crave, regardless of my skill, it ends up draining me of all
The ignorance and bliss, happiness, got me asking where? when? how? We got to all of this, bitterness, wishing I could change the now
I would like to look at life with other eyes
So that I might find new highs, that’ll make me wanna try
I wanna feel alive
Living in the memories
The present’s just too fast
Forgetting what I wanted,
Getting caught up in the past
The ignorance and bliss, happiness,We got through all of this bitterness,
It opened up so much more
I would like to look at life with younger eyes
So that I’m not just chasing highs, that I used to throw aside
I wanna feel alive
I wanna feel alive
